• The Foolish Old Man Removed the Mountains

  愚公移山

• Taihang and Wangwu were two big mountains in the south of Jizhou and north of Heyang.

  太行、王屋两座大山在冀州之南、河阳之北。

• They were seven hundred li around, and ten thousand metres high.

  四周各七百里，高一万里。

• An old man lived on the north side of the mountains.

  北山脚下住着一位老人。

• He was 90 years old.

  他九十岁了。

• People called him the Foolish Old Man.

  人们都叫他愚公。

• The mountains stood in his way to the south.

  这两座大山挡住了他去南部的道路。

• He was very unhappy.

  他很不开心。

• So he said to his family, "Shall we work together to remove the two mountains?

  于是愚公便召集全家人来商量说：“我们一起齐心协力搬掉这两座大山，好吗？

• Then we can go straight to the south."

  然后我们就可以直接去南部了。”

• They agreed to his idea.

  大家纷纷表示赞同他的意见。

• The Foolish Old Man and his sons began to break rocks and dig earth.

  愚公于是带领他的儿子们，凿石挖土。

• They carried the rocks and earth in baskets to the seaside of Bohai.

  用箕畚装土石运到渤海的边上。

• One trip to the sea took them a long time.

  每次运土到海边都要花费很长的间。

• They left in winter and came back in summer.

• People called him the Wise Old Man.

• He laughed at the Foolish Man and said to him, "How unwise you are!

  他嘲笑愚公说：“你真是太不聪明了！

• You are old and weak.

  凭你残余的岁月，剩余的力气。

• You cannot even pull out a tree from the mountains.

  连山上的一根草木都动不了。

• How can you remove them?"

  又能把泥土和石头怎么样呢？”

• The Foolish Old Man said, "You don't understand.

  愚公长叹一声说：“你思想顽固。

• When I die, there will be my sons, and my sons will have their sons and grandsons.

  即使我死了，还有儿子在呀；我的儿子也将会有他们的儿子和孙子。

• The family will carry on, but the mountains will not grow.

  子子孙孙没有穷尽的，可是山不会增高加大。

• Why can't we remove them?"

  为什么还担心移不走呢？”
